MITREE PARAHOM
THAI FOLKERNATIVE ARTIST
Srisaket born artist, Mitree Parahom is the lord of his manor. Walking into Chulalongkorn Art graduation is like stepping into a fine art field. After graduating, Mitree has created his own mythology. He always integrates the spirit of folkways into the style of Western art, which he has studied so far from university. His father is the source of his inspiration while his mother is the provider which is evident in his nature controlled canvases.
“Things aren’t as tamed or tranquil as they appear” he says.
Explaining the imagery in his pictures, the works portray surban wisdom, simplicity, and the return to nature shown through a harmonious lifestyle. But not segregating humanity from the soul of the creatures, the works present a holistic outlook on the correlation between nature and truth, consequent in a total picture of the Thai society in the times past. The animals depicted can be found in the canvases that captures scenes from his family’s farm. Cows chew on the cud, chickens scratch and squawk, and buffalos roam in the pastures of clove on the surrounding walls.
Mitree always explores his animal farm from every angle. He also develops and perseveres his unique painting style into the wisdom of Isan, Northeast of Thailand, his motherland. The objects in his works are cut-out details in simple shape and form rather than expressed in realistic ways. The torrid Isan weather, represented by warm tone colors, always generates an atmosphere that touches the audience even if they have never been there.
Throughout his expression, Mitree always inherits his works for the sustainability of Isan culture, which has shaped his wisdom and spirit since he was young. This spirit is as a fuel, driving him to continue and develop his work until today. And he still believes this sustainability idea will be passed through and continue to exist in the future.
